June 6, 2021-Denk "Mountain" and the OMWD Reservoir behind Von's and Michaels.
When you shop, get frozen Yogurt or take in a movie at La Costa Towne Square, you notice a “mountain” just to the east, with a round green reservoir tank near the top. While calling it a mountain may be a stretch, its name is Denk Mountain, and the reservoir tank is Denk reservoir, operated by OMWD, which stores water for its water distribution system. As quoted from the San Diego Reader:
“Denk Mountain is the unofficial name of the highest point in the City of Carlsbad. It may be a little presumptuous to call it a mountain, but at 1041 feet of elevation, it is high enough to offer dramatic views up and down the San Diego coast, especially west to where the Batiquitos Lagoon discharges into the Pacific. The name honors the Denk family, who once owned much of the land that is now the Rancho La Costa Preserve, which is owned and managed by a non-profit, the Center for Natural Lands Management (tax deductible donations are appreciated).” (San Diego Reader, 3/20/19)
Here I am at the top after a good hike. You can see Mexico, downtown San Diego, and all of La Costa and Catalina on a clear day. It’s great exercise, but watch out for the mountain bikers.
