November 13, 2025- Salton Sea Inspection Tour
The Salton Sea is a large, shallow, saline lake formed in 1905 when floodwaters from the Colorado River filled a desert basin in Imperial County. It is an important stop along the Pacific Flyway, providing critical habitat for millions of migratory birds each year. Maintaining its health is important for the many bird species that depend on it and for mitigating harmful dust for its local residents. On November 13th, I joined a tour of an important mitigation project aimed at preserving the Salton Sea environment. It is an impressive project. On the same trip, we met with citrus farmers and Imperial Irrigation District directors to learn more about their operations and the challenges they face in Imperial Valley.
